Biography:
Council Member Cynthia Hedge-Morrell brings a wealth of experience
and dedication as she begins her journey in public service from Principal
of McDonough #15 Creative Arts to City Council Member of District
D. Mrs. Morrell has worked in private industry in marketing, construction,
and thoroughbred racing and breeding. Various life experiences from
a teacher's union representative and an administrator provided her
with insight to effectively integrate disparate entities to achieve
a common goal.
Mrs. Morrell began teaching at McDonough #15 School in 1976 and went
on to become the Principal in 1985. During her tenure as Principal,
McDonough #15 became a school for Creative Arts, which was recognized
by Red Book Magazine as one of America's Best Schools.
In 1998,
Mrs. Morrell was appointed by the Superintendent of Public Schools
as Special Assistant to the Superintendent for Governmental Affairs.
She developed the first published Legislative Agenda for the school
district for local, state and federal issues.
In 2000,
again as Principal, she developed the New Orleans Center for the Creative
Arts (NOCCA) Academy, a middle school for the visual and performing
arts. Mrs. Morrell's vision took the school from a starter program
to its present full-time academic and arts program for students in
grades sixth through eighth, as well as the construction of a state-of-the-art
Dance Studio.
Council Member Hedge-Morrell has served on numerous committees and
boards, including the Louisiana State Racing Commission, the French
Quarter Festival Committee, and the French Market Board, and as Trustee
for the Center for Developmental Learning. Mrs. Morrell is also a
member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, the International Reading
Association, and the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee.
She was an Alternate Delegate to the National Democratic Convention
2000, and a Delegate to the National Democratic Convention 2004.
Mrs. Morrell
received her Bachelor of Administration in Elementary Education from
the University of New Orleans and her Master of Science from Loyola
University of New Orleans. In 1985, she furthered her educational
goals to obtain her Administrative Supervision Certification from
the University of New Orleans.
Council
Member Hedge-Morrell is the daughter of the late Randolph Hedge and
Olga Johnson Hedge. She is the wife of State Representative Arthur
Morrell and has successfully raised four sons, Todd, Matthew, Jean
Paul, and Nicholas Morrell. She is the grandmother of Kristin, Farrah,
Ana, Mea, and Maximillan Morrell. |
