| On Tuesday,
March 17, 2008 Councilmembers Arnie Fielkow and Stacy Head gathered at the
Jewish Community Center, along with approximately 200 people comprised of
city and state representatives, coaches, parents, American Tennis Association
members, and otherwise concerned citizens, to discuss the future of NORD
Atkinson-Stern Tennis Center. The city was represented by Deputy CAO, Cynthia
Sylvain Lear and Director of Capital Projects, Mariam Lemann. Ms. Lear quoted
a budget of approximately $1.5 million currently available for the re-development
of the Center and announced that the city has made a jumpstart on the rebuilding
efforts by hiring the architectural firm of Burghdal & Graves to prepare
preliminary designs for the redevelopment. (see plans here). Participants
also viewed a presentation by Mr. David Schumacher of Schumacher Tennis,
LLC, who offered another vision for the redevelopment. The
community meeting concerning the Atkinson-Stern Tennis Center will be
held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 from 8:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. The meeting will
be held in the cafeteria on the first floor of Samuel J. Green Charter
School located at 2319 Valence Street (on the corner of La Salle Street).
On behalf of ORDA, Tony Facione invites the community to contact his office
at 658-4215, as well as Councilmembers Arnie Fielkow and Stacy Head, or
NORD, with any additional suggestions regarding the Atkinson-Sterns Tennis
Center. Inquiries may also include comments on the Burghdal & Graves
preliminary design, the Schumacher design, or to present other possible
designs.
The NORD Atkinson-Stern
Center is vital to the citizens of New Orleans and the City Government
looks forward to working with the community to bring back a top-notch
tennis facility as soon as possible.
